8(a) Small Disadvantaged Business Certification (SBA)
8(a) is a special federal status given to a firm owned and operated by persons deemed to be socially or economically disadvantaged. A business considered an 8(a) firm is eligible to receive financial assistance, training, mentoring and other forms of assistance. The status is part of a business development program administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA), an agency charged with supporting the growth and development of small businesses. Woman Business Enterprise (WBE)
WBE businesses are owned by women. Having a WBE Certification is the only way the purchasing agents have confidence that a business representing itself as woman-owned is, in fact, woman-owned and controlled. The intent of this program is to encourage government entities to utilize women-owned firms at a higher level in both the number of firms awarded contracts and the dollar amounts awarded to them. Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB) Certification
WOSB businesses are small businesses owned by women. WOSB certified businesses are considered small businesses as defined by the applicable NAICS code and are at least 51% directly owned and controlled by one or more women. Disadvantaged Business Enterprises through the Department of Transportation in Iowa and Illinois are at least 51% owned by one or more both socially and economically disadvantaged business owners.
