When I first started my internship at Media Link, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It has been my first step into the professional world, and I was a little uncertain at first. Now that I have been working with Natalie and the team over the last few months, I feel that I have gained a better understanding of the important role that social media plays in the marketing world and how it is important in all areas and fields.
As an English major, a lot of my area of study has focused on the close analysis of literature, its craft, and writing academically. This is very different from my experience at Media Link. I have learned that writing academically and creatively is far different from writing professionally. Both academic and creative writing encourage one to write in their own voice, this is different from professional work since we are generally working with clients that want their writers to create work that speaks for them. Writing for social media was very new to me when I started with Media Link. When writing for different clients’ social media accounts, it is important that you take their voice and perspective into careful consideration. Instead of writing something the way that you normally would, you must try to embody your client through your words. This has been a major part of my experience at Media Link, and I have enjoyed the challenge of writing from different perspectives and voices.
Social media is a difficult medium of advertising and marketing, but these days it is absolutely necessary. Social media exists across all industries and businesses which is what makes it so important as a tool. No matter the client, profession, or industry, social media will remain one of the most important media connections to use. I have learned that you must be consistent and engaging in the use of social media as a business. Through my work with social media marketing analysis, I can gain insights on how to best use social media for a client and compare our work at Media Link with the marketing shown on competitor’s accounts. You learn to compare yourself in a way that encourages you to tailor your approach to your client. Through this analysis I have learned how to see what’s working for a client, what isn’t, and how to improve their social media presence.
I have only been working for three months and have gained such a different perspective on marketing and advertising in relation to writing and copyediting. I have learned so much from my internship with Media Link and I hope to continue to build on the skills that I have already gained.
